Renters.fyi ("us", "we", or "our") operates the Renters.fyi website (the "Service").

Information We Collect

When you submit rental information through our Service, we collect the following categories of data:

Rental Submission Data:

  • Lease details (start date, duration, monthly rent, concessions)
  • Unit information (type, square footage, bedrooms, bathrooms)
  • Building/property information (address via Google Places API)
  • Amenities and features (parking, pet policies, utilities, etc.)

Technical Data (Collected Automatically):

  • IP Address: We collect and store your IP address when you submit rental information. This is used to prevent spam, abuse, and fraudulent submissions. IP addresses are stored in our database alongside submissions.
  • User Agent: We collect browser and device information to help identify automated/bot submissions.
  • Timestamps: We record when submissions are made.

How We Use Your Information

  • To display aggregated rental pricing data to users
  • To analyze rent market trends and per-location statistics
  • To prevent abuse, spam, and fraudulent submissions
  • To improve and maintain our Service
  • To enforce our Terms of Service

Data Sharing and Third-Party Services

We share data with the following third-party service providers:

Google Places API: We use Google's Places API to look up and validate building/property addresses. When you search for a property, your query is sent to Google. Google's Privacy Policy applies to this data.

Slack: When new rental submissions are made, we send submission details (including IP address, user agent, rent information, and property details) to our internal Slack workspace for moderation and monitoring purposes.

Hosting and Infrastructure: Our Service is hosted on cloud infrastructure providers who may have access to data as part of providing hosting services. We also use Cloudflare for security and performance.

Data Anonymity Disclosure

While we do not require account registration and submissions are not linked to named user accounts, please be aware that the combination of specific property address, rent amount, lease dates, and IP address could potentially be used to identify individuals in certain circumstances. We implement privacy thresholds (requiring minimum submission counts before displaying individual data points) to help protect contributor privacy, but we cannot guarantee complete anonymity.

Data Retention

We retain rental submission data indefinitely to maintain historical pricing records. IP addresses and technical metadata are retained for abuse prevention and may be periodically purged after 24 months. Submissions that are removed for policy violations are soft-deleted but may be retained for compliance and legal purposes.

Log Data

We collect information that your browser sends whenever you visit our Service ("Log Data"). This Log Data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol ("IP") address, browser type, browser version, the pages of our Service that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages and other statistics.

Cookies

Cookies are files with a small amount of data, which may include an anonymous unique identifier. Cookies are sent to your browser from a web site and stored on your computer's hard drive.

We use "cookies" to collect information. You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of our Service.

Data Deletion Requests: If you wish to have your submission data removed, please contact us at hello@renters.fyi with details about your submission (approximate date, property, etc.) so we can locate and remove it.

Security

The security of your Personal Information is important to us, but remember that no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your Personal Information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Children's Privacy

Our Service is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.

Changes To This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
